Hearing Test and Hearing Exam in McAllen, TX
A complete hearing test takes about an hour. You leave with your own audiogram and an explanation of what it means.
What happens during a hearing test?
A diagnostic hearing test at Mid Valley Hearing Technologies takes about 45 to 60 minutes and includes video otoscopy, tympanometry, air and bone conduction thresholds, speech reception threshold, word recognition scoring and QuickSIN speech-in-noise testing. You leave with a printed audiogram and a clear explanation of your results, whether or not you buy anything.
A hearing test should answer three separate questions: how much you have lost, where in the ear the problem sits, and how well you understand speech, especially in noise. Our hearing test covers all three.
The full test here runs on MedRx equipment: a calibrated audiometer, a video otoscope wired into it, and a tympanometer. Everything is measured in the same session so the results line up with each other.

What does this service include?
- Air and bone conduction (AC & BC)Tones delivered through headphones and through the bone behind the ear. The gap between the two is what separates a conductive problem, such as wax, fluid or a middle-ear issue, from nerve loss.
- Speech reception threshold (SRT)The softest level at which you can correctly repeat words back. It cross-checks the tone results; if the two disagree, something is off and we look harder.
- Word recognition score (WRS)How many words you get right at a comfortable volume. This is the number that predicts how much a hearing aid will help you.
- QuickSIN: speech in noiseMost people find noisy places the hardest. QuickSIN measures how much signal you need above background noise, which is the complaint most people have.
- TympanometryMiddle-ear pressure and eardrum mobility. It catches fluid, negative pressure and perforations that a tone test would miss entirely.
- Video otoscopyA look inside the canal on screen before anything else happens, because if there is a wall of wax in there, no test result is going to be valid.
What happens during the visit?
We talk first
Where you struggle. Restaurants, the phone, church, the truck, your grandchildren. What you tell us shapes the test.
A look inside the ear
Video otoscopy on screen. If wax is blocking the canal, we deal with it before testing; otherwise the numbers are meaningless.
Middle ear check
Tympanometry, roughly a minute per ear. Quick, painless, and it rules a lot in or out.
The tone and speech battery
AC, BC, SRT, WRS and QuickSIN. This part takes the most time.
Your results, explained
We put the audiogram up and go through it. What the shape means, what it will affect, and whether a hearing aid is even the right answer for you. Sometimes it is not.
Already wear hearing aids?
The battery also covers aided versus unaided speech recognition, the same speech testing run with your aids in and with them out. It shows whether your hearing aids are doing what they should. If they are not, it is often a programming problem we can fix during your visit.
Hearing Test: questions we get asked
Plan on 45 to 60 minutes for a first visit. That includes the sit-down conversation at the start and going through your audiogram at the end, which is the part people find most useful.
No. Nothing invasive happens. Tympanometry puts a very slight pressure change in the ear canal for about a second per ear. Some people describe it as the feeling of a lift changing floors.
No referral is needed to book a hearing test with us. If anything in your results points to something medical, such as sudden loss on one side, drainage, pain or a perforation on the tympanogram, we will refer you to a physician or ENT.
Yes. You leave with your audiogram whether you buy anything or not, and it is yours to take to a second opinion, an ENT, or a benefit provider.
Call for current pricing on a full hearing test. We will happily quote you over the phone. Annual testing is included at no extra cost for care plan members.
Yes. Your test, your results and the conversation about your options can all be in Spanish. Se habla español.
