Does Insurance Cover Hearing Aids in Texas?

It depends on the kind of plan you have. Here is how coverage usually works for Medicare, Medicaid, the VA and employer plans in Texas.

Does insurance cover hearing aids in Texas?

Original Medicare does not cover hearing aids in Texas. Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans frequently do, through third-party networks. Texas Medicaid coverage is limited and varies by program and age. The VA covers eligible veterans at no cost. Commercial plans vary widely, and many include a hearing benefit administered by TruHearing, UnitedHealthcare Hearing, Start Hearing or NationsHearing.

Original Medicare: no

Parts A and B do not cover hearing aids, or the exams to fit them. Legislation to change this has been introduced several times and has not passed.

Part B does cover diagnostic hearing and balance exams when a physician orders them to investigate a medical condition. That coverage does not extend to hearing aids.

Medicare Advantage: often yes

Part C plans, run by private insurers, compete on extra benefits, and hearing is one of the most common. The structure is usually a covered exam plus an allowance or fixed pricing on a defined device menu, delivered through a network:

Texas Medicaid: limited

Coverage exists but is restricted, varies by program, and is considerably more generous for children than for adults. Check with your program for details. We are not a Medicaid provider.

The VA: yes, for eligible veterans

Eligible veterans can receive hearing aids through VA audiology at no cost, including batteries and repairs. We are not a VA provider, so VA benefits cannot be used at our clinic.

Commercial and employer plans: check

Many include a hearing benefit through one of the four networks. Two plans from the same insurer can differ a lot, so check your plan documents or call the member number on your card.

The easiest way to find out

Bring your plan card to the clinic and we will check your hearing benefit for free. If your plan has no hearing benefit, we will go over your other options.
