Hearing Aid Cost in the Rio Grande Valley: What a Quote Should Include
National figures, what a written quote should include, your 30-day trial rights in Texas, and what hearing aids cost to keep running each year.

In short
Hearing aid cost depends on the device, its technology level and the services bundled into the price. A 2025 national survey put the average prescription hearing aid at about $1,700 per device, so a pair often costs around $3,000 or more. Your price depends on your hearing test and any benefit you have. Mid Valley Hearing Technologies in McAllen gives you the full price before you decide.
What hearing aid cost looks like nationally
The most recent figures come from the MarkeTrak 2025 survey, published in a peer-reviewed journal. It puts the average prescription hearing aid at about $1,700 per device, with a median of $1,560. Over-the-counter hearing aids averaged $510, with a median of just $150.
Older data ran higher. A National Academies report put the average pair at $4,700 in 2013, within a range of $3,300 to $6,000, and that price included professional services. Surveys differ in what they count, so use these figures as background.
We do not post a single price at our clinic, because it depends on what your hearing test shows, the technology level that suits your daily life, and whether you have a benefit. Jordan Ortega goes over the full price with you before you decide anything.
What a good quote should include
Many clinics use a bundled price. The National Academies report describes a single figure covering the evaluation, fitting, programming and follow-up visits. Others itemize each test, device and service, so you pay only for what you use. Either way can work well. These are good questions to ask at any clinic in the Valley:
- What is included, and for how long? Ask about the hearing test, fitting, follow-up visits, cleanings and supplies.
- What happens when the included service ends? Ask what a visit, a cleaning or a repair costs after that.
- What does the warranty cover? Ask how long it lasts, and whether it includes loss and damage or only repairs.
- Is there a charge if I return them during the trial? Texas rules allow an amount agreed in advance, so ask for the dollar figure before you sign.
- Who will I see when I come back? At Mid Valley Hearing Technologies, you see Jordan each time.
Texas gives you a 30-day trial on hearing aids
State rules for hearing instrument sales give you a trial period of 30 consecutive days from the date of delivery. If you return the aids in good condition during that time, you are entitled to a refund of what you paid, minus any amount you agreed to in advance for the trial.
All charges tied to the trial must be written into your contract, so read that part closely and ask what you would get back if the aids do not work out. The refund is due within 30 days after you return them. If an aid has to go back to the manufacturer for repair or a remake during the trial, the 30 days start over when you pick it up. If the last day falls on a holiday, a weekend or a day the clinic is closed, the trial runs until the first day it reopens.
The rule also requires a written contract when you buy. It should show the date of sale, the make, model and serial number, whether the device is new, used or reconditioned, and how long it is covered and by whom. Keep your copy somewhere you can find it.
How a hearing benefit can change the price
If your health plan includes a hearing benefit, pricing usually follows that plan's network. Our clinic is contracted with four of them: TruHearing, UnitedHealthcare Hearing, Start Hearing and NationsHearing. Bring your card and we can check what applies to you.

What hearing aids cost to keep running each year
Hearing aids also cost money to keep running. At our clinic, wax filters are $10 for an 8-pack and batteries are $10 for a 6-pack, which comes to about $100 in a typical year. Microphone guards are $20 a pack, or about $60 a year. An in-house repair runs $99 to $299, depending on the problem. Add cleanings, adjustments and an annual hearing test, and the yearly total can climb faster than people expect.
Our hearing aid care plans cover those items for $40 a month or $400 a year. That includes ear wax removal, annual testing, tympanometry, adjustments, firmware updates, supplies, same-day visits and one in-house repair a year. Everything in the plan comes to more than $1,580 a year at list value. The plans cover the seven brands Jordan services, wherever you bought your hearing aids.
Ways to lower the cost
If hearing aid cost feels high at first, you have some options to talk through with Jordan:
- Financing. We offer CareCredit from six to 60 months, with interest-free options on the six and 12 month plans, subject to CareCredit approval.
- A different technology level. Premium processing is a good fit for some lifestyles and more than others need. Unitron's Flex platform lets you wear a level in your real life before you decide.
- A repair. If you already own hearing aids from one of the seven brands we service, have them checked before replacing them. Jordan can often fix them in-house.
- Over-the-counter hearing aids. The FDA says these are for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. A test first will tell you whether your loss falls in that range.
